A million words later

Considering this interview with Iain M Banks is only five minutes long, he certainly manages to come up with several interesting points – too many for me to discuss in one blog post. One to ponder on for now is his theory that you have to write at least a million words (or as he puts it, “a million words of rubbish”) before you get published. Firstly, I doubt the million words that he wrote were in the slightest bit rubbish, and secondly, it gives hope to all aspiring authors out there that it even takes someone like Banks to write five or six novels before getting noticed.
