The Book Club Collective

Starting this month, our Book Club will be taking on the interesting challenge of writing our own book. The idea is that everyone takes it in turns to write a chapter, after reading the previous ones that have been written and deciding where the story might go next. I have agreed to start the process, and considering the amount of story ideas I have come up with over the years, but never have the chance to develop, I’m hoping it won’t take too long for me to get the first chapter going. The collectively written book can be of any genre or writing style, and indeed these things might change throughout the course of the story, as different writers take up the pen.

This is where it will get interesting – everyone in the Book Club has different interests and prefers different genres and styles of writing. And so because there is nothing to stop anyone completely changing the course of the story, killing off the main character if they don’t really like them very much, adding a few aliens or mythical creatures if so desired, or anything else that might take the current writers fancy, this process will really highlight everyone’s individual styles and tastes when it comes to reading.

Naturally, I couldn’t possibly predict what the finished product will look like, or how long it might take to complete, but watch this space for updates on progress. Who knows, the final manuscript may be available to download as an e-book, one day in the future…

I can’t wait to get this up and running. I think it will be hilarious as each chapter subtly, or maybe not so subtly, changes the direction of the story.
