Where does inspiration come from?

From news stories to landscapes to dreams, inspiration for stories and characters can come from many different places. This has always interested me – pinning down that exact moment of clarity during writing, or when you see something and think – “That right there has a story just waiting to be told.”

This is a nice example – children’s author Rolad Dahl, a staple of my childhood, was inspired to write a short story after hearing about the discovery of a hoard of Roman silver by a farmer in Suffolk. As relayed here on the Roald Dahl Museum website, Dahl said that when he first read the news article, “it sent shivers of electricity all the way down my legs to the soles of my feet.”
