Looking at the sales figures for 2012, it seems that fears over the potential decline in the purchase of books, due to the rise in popularity of e-readers, was unfounded. According to Philip Jones, editor of The Bookseller, the “death” of the physical book is a long way off, with 80% of book sales currently being of physical books, rather than their e-equivalents.
What 50 Shades of Grey has got to do with this, I don’t know. Perhaps we’ll have to wait for the 2013 sales figures to see if, without the exploits of Mr Grey to keep the masses entertained, book sales will decline. I don’t mean that to sound harsh – I think I know what the results will be, because I’d like to think that all those who bought a copy of 50 Shades won’t make that their only book purchase, even if all some people are interested in is badly written fan fiction that features mild pornography.
